Historic Little Italy Housing Committee Goals for 2009

Work with the Design Committee on the annual Clean-Up, Green-Up week.
Add more participants to the "Adopt a Park" (block, lot) program.
Plant trees!
Work with the School Board to develop relationships between Roosevelt Middle School and the Historic Little Italy neighborhood.
Participate as needed in any discussions regarding the development of the skatepark in or near Columbus Park, and encourage its proper design, siting, lighting, etc.
Clean and/or upgrade one key alley in the neighborhood.
Continue to remove blighted properties.
Convert one vacant lot into a positive use.
Coordinat with the Design Committee to continue discussions with the owners to gain site control of property and begin design of a parking area in the 200 block of West 16th Street.
Implement positive changes to redirect truck traffic to West 12th Street.
Develop and adopt a maintenance code for the neighborhood and begin promoting it and educating residents about it; Work with City officials regarding enforcement of the code.
Working with HANDS and the ERA, begin construction of the townhomes on West 18th Street.
Meet with LECOM and Saint Vincent Health System to identify ways to recruit students and interns to new housing within the neighborhood and explore any interests they may have in supplying housing, while continuing to work with HANDS, ERA, and the City on housing rehabilitation, home ownership programs, and employer-assisted housing.
Evaluate and enhance the home ownerhip program.
Work with the City to successfully implement the rental inspection program in the neighborhood.
Meet with owners of Lake Shore Industries to discuss potential issues with parking and green space on lots 663 and 701, potential alternative uses for the bike shop and theater, and their capabilities to supply signage, historic markers, and other elements of the streetscaping or gateway plans.
